Cuc Phuong comprises 22,200 hectares of primary forest, and represents a typical limestone forest ecosystem with the highest concentration of biodiversity in Vietnam. Many rare and colorful animals such as Delacour’s Langur, Spotted Deer and Silver pheasant still inhabit Cuc Phuong, visitors are always amazed by the impressive beauty of the ancient tree species such as Terminalia myriocarpa, Tetrameles nudiflora, Dracontomelum duperreanum. Due to the limestone on which Cuc Phuong grows there are many caves, the Animal Cave and the Cave of Prehistoric Man have evidences of the earliest human habitation in Vietnam. Fossils, such as that of the 200 million-year-old sea reptile (Placodontia) have also been discovered in the limestone.
During 40 years of conservation and development, Cuc Phuong is a model for conservation in Vietnam. Additional to the primary roll of the national park to conserve native fauna and flora there is also a strong scientific department dedicated to improving the understanding of Vietnam’s wildlife.
